Pricing Strategies for Optimizing Resources

Pricing is one of the most complex processes involved in marketing a hotel product. It is essential to implement revenue management tools in hotel management to align our rates with the goals we have set and with the demands of the market. Let’s take a detailed look at the factors that influence pricing strategies.

Factors That Influence Pricing

Hotels focus most of their revenue management strategies on developing and implementing the pricing structure that best suits both the establishment itself and the market in which it operates.

First, let’s keep in mind that setting prices is not a one-time activity. In order to sell our product more and better and make it profitable, we’ll need to keep our rates up to date at all times.

We can and should set prices based on the market, demand, competition, costs, and supply. In addition to these factors, we must also consider a number of other factors when establishing our pricing strategy.

  • Define our offering: Our rooms are not all the same, and we can develop promotions or sales strategies.
  • Understanding our competition: their rates, availability, promotional activities, and everything that sets us apart from them. Customers always book a room after comparing prices and similar products.
  • Analyzing our market: We must carefully consider the number of tourists who visited our city—their origin, ages, length of stay, and how far in advance they booked. All of this will provide us with valuable information.
  • Segmenting and evaluating our customers: understanding their needs and expectations so we can diversify our offerings.
  • Let’s analyze our historical data: for example, reviewing and analyzing data from the same period in previous years. These statistics will allow us to make a realistic forecast when considering whether to raise rates, launch special offers, or run specific promotions.
  • Demand drivers: Update your event calendar to identify dates likely to generate more reservations.
  • Online presence: Analyze our online reputation relative to our competitors, as well as our booking volume.

Pricing Strategies: Rates

Once we have taken all these factors into account, we will be in a position to implement the necessary mechanisms to establish a pricing strategy for our hotel management that will enable us to achieve our goals of efficiency, competitiveness, and profitability.

There are several options for the pricing structure that can be used to establish a pricing strategy.

Demand-Based Rates

Known as demand-based pricing, these rates will have several tiers, each of which will reflect an occupancy rate and be associated with a price ratio commensurate with that demand. When occupancy varies on a given day, the rate tier will also change.

Pricing by Segment

This is another pricing method used in hotel management. The hotel must segment its demand according to the different types of guests and markets it serves. This includes, for example, individual guests, corporate clients, groups, and tour operators.

Fixed-Rate Pricing

The hotel assumes that all its guests are the same, with identical needs and interests. Selling rooms at the same rate would prevent the hotel from generating additional revenue from guests who could afford to pay more.

Price Discrimination

Also known as dynamic pricing, this involves offering different rates based on the hotel’s segmentation. The hotel must always take its guests’ preferences into account when they make a reservation, since each target audience perceives the presentation of offers and rates differently. The hotel must be very careful with its rates and how they vary.
