1-Star Hotels
To qualify for a one-star rating, a hotel must ensure that its single rooms are at least 7 square meters, while double rooms must be at least 12 square meters.
As for the bathroom, it must be at least 3.5 square meters in size and may include both a bathtub and a shower.
In addition, the hotel must have an elevator and heating in all rooms as part of its basic amenities.
2-star hotels
Hotels seeking two stars must increase the size of their double rooms and offer additional services. Double rooms must be at least 14 square meters, while maintaining the same requirements for single rooms and bathrooms (7 square meters and 3.5 square meters, respectively, with bathtub or shower).
In addition to an elevator and heating, a telephone in the room and a safe must be provided for guests.
3-star hotels
Upgrading to 3-star status requires larger rooms and bathrooms, as well as improved amenities in common areas. Single rooms must be at least 8 square meters , double rooms at least 15 square meters, and bathrooms at least 4 square meters, with a bathtub or shower.
To obtain this certification, the hotel must have a guest bar, air conditioning in common areas, and meet the requirements of the previous categories: an elevator, heating, a telephone, and a safe.
4-star hotels
This category is awarded after meeting specific requirements regarding room size and additional services. Single rooms must be at least 9 square meters , double rooms at least 16 square meters, and bathrooms with bathtubs and showers must be larger than 4.5 square meters.
In addition to standard amenities, the hotel offers minibars in the rooms, air conditioning, telephones, safes, elevators, and bars for guests’ enjoyment and relaxation.
5-star hotels
The highest rating in Spain is for 5-star hotels , representing an exceptional level of service. Single rooms must be at least 10 square meters. Double rooms must be no smaller than 17 square meters. Bathrooms, which must include both a shower and a bathtub, must be at least 5 square meters.
In addition to offering the amenities of a 4-star hotel, it stands out for its spacious rooms and bathrooms, providing guests with a luxurious stay.
Among these luxuries are amenities such as a swimming pool, hot tub, sauna, and gym. There are also sports facilities, such as tennis courts, and other amenities you’ll find on-site. All of this offers added comfort right there on the premises. Some of these hotels even have a casino.
6 and 7 star hotels?
Many of you wonder if 6 and 7 star hotels exist. In the standard European and American classifications, the highest level of luxury for a hotel is 5 stars.
However, in other local classification systems, you may find hotels rated at 6 and 7 stars. An example of this can be found in some Asian countries.
Keep in mind that each country may have its own variations. Mexico, for example, has a category above 5 stars. It’s the GL category—or Gran Lujo—which includes hotels offering elegant rooms and suites, as well as spa facilities, fine-dining restaurants, personalized services, and exclusive amenities. All of this ensures a unique experience for guests. Click this link to see the 20 best Gran Lujo hotels in Mexico.
I hope this overview of the different categories has helped you understand the differences between them.
So, when buying a hotel, don’t be swayed solely by its star rating. And seek advice from experts in the field to secure a favorable deal.
