How can a hotel capitalize on niche markets?

The structure of the hotel industry and its ongoing challenges are driving us to invest more in new strategies to better understand the various market niches—that is, our future guests— and thus meet their tastes and needs. Market niches are within reach for all hotels—and therefore for new projects and the development sector—which is essential for maintaining growth in a positive spiral.

No two hotels are alike, and neither are their guests. Within this context, a hotel must focus on quantifying the value each guest can bring and commit to incorporating personalized management into every process. Today, most hotels choose to invest in marketing and adopt a different approach, focusing all their efforts on niche markets to achieve their goals.

The Challenge of Choosing the Right Market Niche

How does a hotel choose the right market niche? Market segmentation plays a very important role; first, it’s much easier to identify the target audience, and then to reach them through experiences related to travel, dining, the stay itself, or even complementary activities. Some hotels demonstrate that it’s possible to tap into a more profitable market if we know how to segment our audience properly, which can significantly improve occupancy rates and the guest experience itself.

Targeting niche markets is not just a trend; it is an integral part of progress and the future of the hotel industry. Trends and patterns are constantly changing, which is why we must remain vigilant and adapt our strategies accordingly. In fact, the opportunities that the market offers to different niches can ultimately determine the success of any hotel business.

The Segmentation Strategy

And into how many segments should we divide our guests? The first step is to perform effective market segmentation, taking into account the size of the hotel, knowing its category, considering the additional services offered to guests, current trends, and the distribution channels used to reach guests—these are just a few of the strategies we must not overlook. Segmenting by customer type means dividing our customers into different groups that share common characteristics, thereby facilitating the study and analysis of each group’s profitability. Here are some basic points we must keep in mind when making the most of segmentation:

  • Marketing campaigns targeted at specific segments, designed to carry out more targeted commercial actions in certain sectors and influence the decision-making of our target audience.
  • Sales and communication strategies and channels for each segment. Their proper allocation will directly impact the hotel’s management and distribution capabilities. At this point, we must keep in mind that a single customer can belong to more than one segment at the same time.
  • Various pricing options, where these results are reflected in room reservations or services offered based on the segment to which each customer belongs.
  • Tailoring the range of products and services to each type of customer.

How to Apply Segmentation?

There are many ways to segment; we can do so based on customer type, generational groups, reason for travel, or even sales channel. A hotel that has identified its target market can design specialized offerings and thereby increase its revenue, improve its operating results, and enhance both customer satisfaction and the establishment’s reputation.

A few years ago, hotels barely took guest expectations into account beyond their room preferences, but today, technology is fully integrated into their daily operations—and, as a result, into the guest experience as well.
